Frame Materials
- Zyl (plastic): many grades available - better grades and frames are machined and polished.
Benefit: Better colors, stronger, more stylistic frames that maintain their shape for more a comfortable fit.
(Lower grades and moulded laquer finished. Colors fade and frames frequently change shape and lose adjustment!).
- Metal:
1. Alloys: There are many basic frame alloys and surface finishes. These frames can be expected to last from several months tos everal years. Less expensive frames start losing their cosmetic finish within weeks. Benefit: inexpensive and easy to adjust.
2. Stainless Steel: Frames have been made of stainless steel for many years. This material is less corrosive than the alloys, but the quality and durability depends on the finish. Benefit: lighter weight, stronger and usually more durable than alloy frames.
3. Titanium: It's the strongest, lightest and most durable frame material. It's completely hypoallergenic, non-corrosive, inert and has a long-lasting finish. Benefit: light, comfortable, maintains its shap, lasts longer than any other material. The finish stays on and will never turn your skin green!
4. Memory metals: Titanium alloys have most of the characteristics of titanium with the addition of flexibility in certain frame parts. Benefits: Will maintain its adjustment and fit if accidentally bumped or dropped.
- Nylon: moulded material called by many names and various finishes. Benefit: more durable than Zyl in some situations.
